EGCG (Epigallocatechin-3-gallate) is a compound found in green tea that has anti-fibrotic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects. A pilot study supported by Three Lakes Foundation demonstrated that EGCG markedly attenuated pro-fibrotic signaling and new collagen accumulation in lung tissue obtained from IPF patients.
The data were published in J. Clin Invest: A fibroblast-dependent TGF-B1/sFRP2 noncanonical Wnt signalin axis promotes epithelial metaplasia in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis”.
The results from this work were used to obtain additional funding for a Phase I clinical trial to assess the safety and efficacy of oral EGCG in IPF patients. The trial is currently ongoing.
